Alexis thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us. First, why don't you tell us a little about yourself;
My name is Alexis Maguire, I own Hellion Photography in Central New Jersey! I love my boyfriend & family and my fluffball cat Princess Leia! I love music, antiquing, and going on little adventures!
Princess Leia, that’s extremely cute! So how long have you been a photographer?
I first picked up a camera when I was around 14 and grew to love it over the next few years until eventually I went to college for it, then worked for other photographers, and opened my own studio! I’ve now had my studio for over 4 years! But I've been doing photographing about 3 times as long as that haha!
Wow, 14! So how did you develop an interest in photography?
I was always interested in art main fine art, when digital photography started becoming more accessible I saw it as a new art form and fell in love with it!
Photography is an art! So what kind of photographs do you take?
I specialize in family, portrait, and commercial photographer. The photos I do most are family and children portraits as well as business portraits.
Thinking of your shoots what kind of subject is the most fun to work with?
My favorite is portraiture, to show people how amazing they can look in a photo makes me happy! Sometimes clients will thank me when they see the final product because they didn't think they could look that good (or they're just happy to get all their kids looking happy in the same photo!)
That’s lovely, so what inspires a shoot?
Fine art inspires me a lot, the use of colors and fantastical subjects. Wardrobe inspires me as well, one great unique outfit can be an amazing jumping point for me!
And which photographers inspire you?
I wouldn't say there are specific photographers I follow, but I’m part of a bunch of photography groups on Facebook so my feed is always full of beautiful work from other photographers and that helps me stay inspired!
So during a shoot how do you spot a great shot?
Light speaks to me the most, so if it outdoors I look for the spot with the best lighting and see how I can work with that environment. If its indoors I can customize my photos a bit more so it's less ‘spotting’ and more creating.
Big question…what equipment do you use?
I’m a Canon person! My favorite lenses are my 50mm f/1.4 for family and children and my 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 for my portraits! My camera of choice is a 5D (whatever the most recent model is at the time!)
On a shoot, what’s the funniest thing that’s happened?
I’m not sure if it’s the funniest but recently I was photographing a little boy and when I went to take his photo, he said ‘Wow! This is going to be such good clickbait!’ he totally caught me off guard and made me laugh!
What a one-liner! Ok thinking back, what’s one trick you wished you knew when starting out?
I wish I knew the technical side a little better, so it would have been nice to know how to use my camera a bit better! I was always creative but some of my photos from when I started are lacking in sharpness and things like that.
So what is one trick you use that you want to share with other photographers?
Maybe not a trick, but a tip! or advice? Don’t be afraid to try new things. You’re always going to be evolving as an artist and that’s awesome, you get to learn so many new things and find things you never know you would love photographing!
Very true! Thinking to the future then, If there’s one skill you wish you could master what would it be?
Digital art! I’m a good retoucher, I even do it for other photographers but digital art is a whole new level, to see someone take 10 images and turn them into one believable scene is amazing!
We love your photographs, they are adorable. Where can people get in touch with you?
I most frequently post on Instagram, @HellionPhotography so you can find me on there! To contact me directly email is best HellionPhoto@gmail.com
Alexis, thank you so much for your time and being apart of the Backdrop Sessions. It’s been great getting to know you and learning what inspires you!
